Not all agents are created equal. Commercial insurance is far less standard and uniform than personal insurance, and a lot more knowledge and work goes into producing quotes with the right coverage for your specific business type. The “15 minutes can save you 15%” approach typically does not apply to commercial insurance, and if someone indicates that it does, they probably have not given your business the proper amount of due diligence.

Questions. How much time does your agent spend trying to find out how your business operates?

Industry knowledge. In your conversations with your agent, how much do they seem to know and understand about the issues affecting your industry?

Carriers. How many and what size insurance companies to they represent? You want an agent that can provide you with several quality companies to choose from.

Experience. How long has the agency been in business? Just as you hope to have a business that survives the ups and downs of the economy, you want an agent that you know will be right there with you through thick and thin.

Services. Outside of simply providing you with quotes, what types of additional benefits and services does your agent provide? Do they offer claims assistance, risk analysis, loss control, or premium audit review?

Partnership. Is your agent a provider of a commodity to you or a trusted advisor? Chances are that if your agent is simply a provider of a product to you, rather than a trusted advisor to your business, there will come a point in the life of your business that you will have an event that threatens the vitality of all of the hard work you have poured into your livelihood. The best agents become a trusted business partner that protects your business as if it were his or her own.


Currently there are over 350 companies licensed to offer worker’s compensation insurance in the state of Tennessee. Having a lot of options to choose from is great for consumers. It ensures that there is adequate competition which keeps costs down and provides ample options to choose from. When choosing which company is right for you, there are several key factors to consider.

AM Best Rating. AM Best is a financial rating company that analyzes the financial stability and creditworthiness of insurance companies. At Frank E. Neal & Co., Inc., we only represent companies A rated or higher.

Claims service. Are the claims handled by the company, or do they hire independent adjusters or third party claims management companies to handle their claims? If possible, you would always prefer to have the claims handled by the company you bought the policy. Companies that handle their own claims tend to have better results and higher customer satisfaction as they have more at stake than a third party claims adjuster.
