We've all had a toilet overflow or witnessed it first hand. According to Nationwide Private Client, there are more than 500,000 sewer back ups each year in the United States. But what most people do not realize is that damage resulting from a sewer or drain backup, is not covered under a lot of standard homeowners insurance policies. If it does come with it, many companies only offer 5,000 or 10,000 of coverage before you have to endorse more coverage onto the policy if it is offered at all.
However, there are several carriers out there that do offer this standard, as part of their policy or will let you include much higher limits.
Our agency actually had a customer whose toilet overflowed in their second story bathroom for a weekend while they were on vacation and the damage was in excess of $150,000!
Below is a great resource from Nationwide Private Client about sewer and drain back ups. If you want to know how much coverage you have, feel free to give us a shout.
